“GMOs are evil” is the left’s version of “There is no climate change”

Liberals whining about GMOs are the left’s version of conservatives whining about climate change.

Every scientific group that has examined this have said that GMO foods are safe. We eat lots of GMO foods every day and have been doing so for many many years.  veggang

Just ask Neil DeGrasse Tyson.  “Practically every food you buy in a store for consumption by humans is genetically modified food. There are no wild, seedless watermelons …You list all the fruit, and all the vegetables, and ask yourself, is there a wild counterpart to this? If there is, it’s not as large, it’s not as sweet, it’s not as juicy, and it has way more seeds in it. We have systematically genetically modified all the foods, the vegetables and animals that we have eaten ever since we cultivated them. It’s called artificial selection.”

Is Monsanto evil and doing things it shouldn’t? Absolutely. But that’s because they’re evil and bribing politicians (oops, sorry, I meant “donating to campaigns”) to get away with putting out dangerous things. There are dangerous substances they are releasing — but they’re not dangerous because they are GMOs. The fact that these dangerous things are GMOs does not mean all GMOs are dangerous.

“The science is quite clear: crop improvement by the modern molecular techniques of biotechnology is safe … The World Health Organization, the American Medical Association, the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, the British Royal Society, and every other respected organization that has examined the evidence has come to the same conclusion: consuming foods containing ingredients derived from GM crops is no riskier than consuming the same foods containing ingredients from crop plants modified by conventional plant improvement techniques.”

When people say, “Climate change isn’t happening” I say, “Well, what do the experts say?” When they say, “Vaccinations cause autism” I go “Do the scientists who deal with this stuff agree?” So when people say “GMOs are bad!” I reply, “What do the people who know this stuff best have to say about it?”

I don’t want to fall into the trap of doing the exact same thing I criticize conservatives for doing — ignoring science when it contradicts your political leanings.

  1. Mike, I usually agree with everything you write, but I have to take issue with this. Yes, humans have always modified crops – through plant splicing and grafting and selective breeding – to make the yields higher, improve the flavors, and otherwise enhance the qualities we find most appealing in plants. However, what Monsanto has done by altering the genetic makeup of plants (in an effort to increase their profits) is create new and insufficiently tested organisms that they have strong-armed into our food supply without our knowledge. The GMO sweet corn is classified as a pesticide by the EPA – did you know that? If you’re not eating organic, non-GMO cereal, you’re getting pesticides with breakfast. And, yes, we have been consuming some of these crops for decades. And what do we have to show for it? Large percentages of the population with chronic health problems, some of which were unheard of 20 years ago. Growing up, did you know anyone with gluten intolerance? No, because that was before they modified the wheat supply. The proliferation of auto-immune disorders is a big fat WARNING sign, because the bulk of our auto-immune system is in our gut. GMOs are not safe, the government agencies that are telling you they are have been paid off, and the accredited scientists who have tried to publish the results of legitimate experiments with GMO crops have had their careers destroyed by the Monsanto legal machine. • There is no connection between gluten allergies and GMOs. No scientific or medical study has found anything. The anecdotal evidence on the web is comparable to ones where people think vaccinations cause autism.

Are some GMOs suspicious and possibly bad? Absolutely. But to brand them all bad just doesn’t make sense and is not supported by any evidence.

  2. Great comparison. Now if you’re really brave, you’ll write one that compares animal-rights people with anti-abortion people. Both groups champion entities that are less-than-human (a fact both groups would fiercely deny). Both groups focus murderous hatred on anyone who would harm the entities they protect. Neither group gets any material benefit out of it at all, other than the opportunity to hate people.
