Stupidest Ben Carson Quotes

Forget the fact that Dr. Ben Carson has never held an elected position in his life and is about as qualified to become the Most Powerful Man in the World as any other random doctor you could find.  He is an idiot when it comes to politics and history.

He is, however, a wonderful source for stupid quotes. Here are some of his best (or worst, depending on how you want to look at it):Obamacare-27

“ObamaCare is the worst thing that has happened in this nation since slavery.” Because providing health care to people to make sure they don’t die is exactly like owning slaves! Why, the two are practically synonymous!

[America is] very much like Nazi Germany.” He said this because he believed liberals are like Nazis, what with their love of equality, gay rights, and freedom of religion. We know how much the Nazis loved those things.

“I think most people when they finish that course, they’d be ready to go sign up for ISIS.” This was his objection to an American history course that taught students about slavery and Martin Luther King, Jr. and civil disobedience — you know, history. Clearly, learning facts would obviously make people immediately join a terrorist group. It goes without saying. Which is why no sane person ever says it.

“Marriage is between a man and a woman. It’s a well-established pillar of society and no group, be they gays, be they NAMBLA [North American Man/Boy Association], be they people who believe in bestiality — it doesn’t matter what they are.”  It’s true, you know. Gay people getting married to the person they love is exactly like non-consentual child molesters and animal abusers.  No, wait, I remember now, they have absolutely nothing to do with each other. My bad.

“Well, do those same people argue for freedom of choice when someone says, ‘I want to buy a gun, I want to buy an Uzi?'”  This one is good. When asked if marijuana should be legal, he said no, it was a gateway drug and it “leads to hedonism.” He was then asked if it wasn’t a matter of free choice, and he responded with this quote. Mind you, he thinks guns should be easy to obtain, so with this quote he is attacking liberals for being hypocrites while simultaneously being exactly as hypocritical.

“Because 9/11 is an isolated incident.”  That was his response to a question asking him how he could say Obamacare is worse than 9/11. Because of course. 9/11 killed thousands of people;  Obamacare has saved thousands. Excellent analogy.

“A lot of people who go into prison go into prison straight — and when they come out, they’re gay.”  This was his scientific evidence that being gay is a choice.

“So if there were a container of contaminated urine, and somehow it managed to find its way to someplace a lot of damage could be done. Someone comes up to a lab worker. He knows he’s got the urine. ‘How would you like to have a million dollars?’ … Such things have been known to happen.”  This is a doctor talking now, about ebola, and how it could be used as a chemical weapon even though every other doctor said no, that couldn’t happen.

“Why did evolution divert in so many directions — birds, fish, elephants, apes, humans — if there is some force evolving to the maximum? Why isn’t everything a human — a superior human?”  What the hell is a doctor doing denying (and clearly not understanding) evolution?

“For most of our history, schoolchildren were taught the guiding principles of the Constitution from the earliest age, and even members of Congress with controversial civil rights histories such as the late Sen. Strom Thurmond of South Carolina and Sen. Robert C. Byrd of West Virginia kept a copy of that great document in their jacket pocket to remind them of the responsibilities and limits of governance.” I talked about this in a previous post wherein this genius talked about things in the Constitution which aren’t there. This quote belongs on this list mostly because the two heroes of the Constitution he mentioned were both KKK members who did everything in their power to subvert the Constitution and keep people like Dr. Ben Carson from having any rights. Sometimes I wonder if maybe this is guy is just suffering from Stockholm Syndrome.

But you know, this idiot is a new Republican icon because he appeals to their stupidity.  (I won’t say he is a conservative icon because there really are smart conservatives.  None of them seem to have any power any more in the new Stupid Party.)

So they love Dr. Ben Carson — a man who is absolutely opposed to government handouts! And he should know — raised in public housing, gone to public schools, fed with food stamps, supported with welfare, kept healthy with medicaid, received federal grants and loans to go to college —  he knows how terrible government is!

Oh, did I mention that besides being stupid, he’s also a flaming hypocrite?

Edit: Please note that this was written back in March of 2015. He’s said a lot more stupid stuff since then.

Family Values

There’s been another example of a Republican cheating on his wife and getting caught with a mistress.do as is say

Yes, some of you respond, but Democrats do that too!  Remember Bill Clinton?

You’re right.  Democrats certainly have no monopoly on ethical behavior.   In the last few weeks there have been a bunch of Democrats being caught in money scandals, for instance (as they rightly should have been).

The issue though isn’t about ethics;  it’s about hypocrisy.

Politicians who talk about “family values” being so important are while they are undermining those same values are hypocrites.   Voting against gay marriage and then getting caught soliciting sex in a men’s bathroom doesn’t help your cause much.   Being against abortion while telling your girlfriend to get one does little to endear you to anyone.

And that’s why it’s news.    And why it gets bigger coverage than it probably should.  It’s the hypocrisy, stupid.

And rightly so.

Capitalists except when Obama does it

The Obama administration recently announced that the regulation of domain names for the internet, which has been controlled by the government, will soon be decided by the free market. dot-com-domain-seisure  So of course conservative groups who rail against government regulation cheered loudly, congratulating Obama for supporting capitalism.

Ha ha! Just kidding!

Just a few days ago we saw how conservatives love capitalism and the free market (except when government regulations help their Big Money contributors).

And how the basic premise behind Fox News is “Whatever Obama does, we’re against it.”

So I don’t have to let you know how Fox reacted, do I?

Fox reacts to Putin’s invasion predictably

“Well, obviously it’s beyond our control. The Russians are advancing. There is nothing that will stop them. We are not going to go to war over it.” — Charles Krauthammer

“There’s really no danger the United States or Europe will get in involved in what is really a civil war.” — Jeff Birnbaum  FoxNews

“We simply don’t have the ground forces to do it.  And confronting the Russians in the air would lead to major hostilities that the USA cannot afford right now.” — Bill O’Reilly

Not one blamed the President for the invasion or implied that Putin did this because the President was “weak.”

Oh, wait!  My bad!  Sorry, these are quotes from Fox News after Putin invaded Georgia when George W. Bush was President.  You remember Bush, who said that he looked into Putin’s soul and saw a good man.

I don’t really have to post what these exact same people are saying about Obama now, do I?  I mean, it’s so predictable, you could write it yourself.

Outing politicians

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the loudest opponents of gay rights are often closeted themselves.

And while I think it should be a personal choice as to whether someone should come out of the closet or not (because, really, it’s nobody’s business), there are times when hypocrisy needs to be exposed. Y4HQJ  I don’t like preachers who warn us not to violate the Ten Commandments while fathering out-of-wedlock children while married to someone else (Looking at you, Jesse Jackson), and I don’t like politicians fighting to keep gays from having rights while being gay themselves.

Congressman Aaron Schock is the latest example.  He’s been outed by gay journalist Itay Hod  for being a hypocrite. Schock is a Republican who hides his identity from his constituents.  Hod argues that the media has an obligation to report this — not because being gay is wrong, but because the congressman is a hypocrite, lying to the voters, in the same way you would report a politician who fights against illegal immigrants while knowingly hiring them.

Schock will join a long line of outed people who fought against gay rights, and will probably lose his seat because of it.  After all, Republicans don’t like politicians who are gay.

If only he had merely cheated on his wife while claiming to be hiking the Appalachian trail.  Or had been caught with prostitutes while wearing diapers.  Or divorced his wife while she was in the hospital for cancer so he could marry the woman he had been having an affair with.   Those sorts of things don’t bother Republicans, as we know.  Mark Sanford, David Vitter, and Newt Gingrich are still respected members of the party.

But being gay?  Well, that’s unforgivable.

Mixing religion and politics? How dare he!

Outraged! Right wing columnists and reporters are outraged that the Pope is speaking out about inequalities in our system. papaOutraged that he thinks governments should do more to stop the huge divide between rich and poor.

Rush Limbaugh warned of this Pope promoting “pure Marxism.” Fox News’ Stuart Varney criticized the Pope’s mixing of religion and politics. Sarah Palin called the Pope the worst name she could think of: “Liberal.” All of them said that the Pope had no business discussing politics.

You all remember how mad these right-wing pundits got about religion intermixing with politics when churches lobbied for laws against abortion, fought to prevent gays from getting married, and pushed to have creationism taught in public schools? (If you do remember, please remind me, because I can’t think of a single example — but clearly there must be, or else these people would be raging hypocrites now, wouldn’t they?)

Meanwhile, the Pope, ignoring them all, is doing his job, which includes sneaking out at night dressed as a normal priest and administering to the poor. Clearly, he is an evil, evil man that must be stopped.

Justifications for the Filibuster Fight

Republicans are angry that the rules have been changed to allow for a simple majority to decide judicial nominations in the Senate (where that had been the norm for more than 200 years).  Democrats responded:

“Any President’s judicial nominees should receive careful consideration. But after that debate, they deserve a simple up-or-down vote”.

“Let’s get back to the way the Senate operated for over 200 years, up or down votes on the president’s nominee, no matter who the president is, no matter who’s in control of the Senate”.

“[W]e can’t find anywhere in the Constitution that says a supermajority is needed for confirmation”.

“I believe [filibustering judicial nominees] is in violation of the Constitution”.

I will vote to support a vote, up or down, on every nominee. Understanding that, were I in the minority party and the issues reversed, I would take exactly the same position because this document, our Constitution, does not equivocate”.

“Why not allow the President to do his job of selecting judicial nominees and let us do our job in confirming or denying them? Principles of fairness call for it and the Constitution requires it”.

Oh!  Wait!  My bad.  Those are all quotes from Republicans arguing against using filibusters at all to stop judicial nominee votes, made at a time when Bush was President and before there was that 60 vote rule.

Clearly, things are much different today. Because, um … well, there must be some difference. Or else all these Republicans would be flaming hypocrites now, wouldn’t they?

Patriot Act Hypocrites

When it comes to the Patriot Act, there are just too many hypocrites to deal with.

The Patriot Act allows the NSA to listen to phone conversations and emails for certain key words, at which time they can get a subpoena to get all the records (a subpoena which has never been denied by the court — great oversight, huh?). It certainly appears to be a complete violation of the 4th Amendment to me and many Constitutional scholars, but until the Supreme Court says so, it’s the law and allowed.

For some reason, this is now a big issue, even though it’s been going on for about ten years. This has brought out a gaggle of hypocrites.

First, you have the ones on the right, who defended George W. Bush when he did this but call Obama’s use of the same law a gross violation of their rights. (These pundits and politicians, centered mostly at Fox News, are part of the same gang that said criticizing GWB during wartime was “treason” but doing the same to Obama during wartime is their patriotic duty.)

The clip below is a great example, showing Fox’s Sean Hannity’s position flipping 180 degrees based on whether this was done by a President Fox supported or one they oppose.

But this is not limited to the right. There are hypocrites on the left as well (though not as many) who opposed this under Bush but approve it under Obama.

The biggest hypocrite on the left is Obama himself. He’s ignored his campaign promises in this regard.

His view is apparently that he is against the abuse that can come from the Patriot Act — but doesn’t see that he is abusing it. In other words, he thinks “In the hands of a bad President, this would be a huge violation of our rights, but I’m not a bad President, and I have used it for good.” I think he is feeling some guilt over this and has recently began to talk about getting rid of it (again) because he is worried about who might hold that office after him.

So he doesn’t see himself as a hypocrite; he sees his position as changed based on the circumstances. How very convenient for him.

The good news is that there are those on both the right and the left who have been consistent in their views on this issue, and they should be congratulated and acknowledged.

How to be a Tea Party hypocrite

It’s really easy. Some of our best Tea Party politicians are experts at it. If you can say these things with a straight face, you may be a Tea Partier:

“The government should respect my right to be left alone to make my own decisions! Also, abortion should be completely illegal.”

“The 10th Amendment allows for state’s rights so states can pass their own laws without federal interference, so the feds should not be telling us what our local gun laws should be. And the feds should stop states from allowing gay marriage and should prohibit New York city from enacting laws limiting drink sizes or smoking!”

“The 2nd amendment is absolute and there can be no exceptions! And we should ignore the 4th amendment’s clear prohibition against people being arrested without probable cause or the 5th’s against self-incrimination when it applies to people we don’t like, because those exceptions are perfectly allowable.”

“The government should not be telling us that we can’t have our religion in their schools. And they should do everything they can to stop this creeping Sharia law infringing upon us!”

“We have to cut the budget to save money no matter how much it may hurt. But not if it means my plane is late or that we have to stop building tanks in my district that the army doesn’t need.”

“We can’t give money to poor people, because that would kill their incentive. We need to give money to rich corporations to give them an incentive to expand and build the economy.”

I’ll stop there, but I’m sure you can think of other great examples…

The 11th Commandment in South Carolina

South Carolina proved how much they love the Bible and Christianity last night by electing Mark Sanford, the adulturing liar, whose slogan was “He’s still got 8 Commandments left he ain’t violated!”

You may remember him as the fellow who used to be governor, cheated on his wife, went “hiking on the Appalachian Trail” to be with his lover in Argentina, and used taxpayer money to do it all.

Upon being elected, he said “I thank the people of South Carolina for their trust.” He then wrung his hands, threw back his head, and emitted an evil laugh.

But you know, his opponent was a Democrat. A clean, honest, decent Democrat but that’s not enough for South Carolina. If Jesus himself came back as a Democrat, he’d lose in South Carolina.

This is the state, just to remind everyone, who also kept re-electing Strom Thurmond, a man who was once a member of the KKK and who fathered an out-of-wedlock child with a black woman and then never told anyone until the child was grown. Ten Commandments? Who cares, his opponent was a Democrat!

It wouldn’t be quite as ironic if they were equally forgiving, but when Bill Clinton had an affair, these same people voted to have him impeached and removed from office. So apparently the Bible only applies to the people they don’t like, and not to them personally.

“Do as I say, not as I do” is now the 11th Commandment in South Carolina.
