Trump’s support isn’t as great as you may think

In a sense, this election will be between two incumbents. When an incumbent runs in a primary, it’s rare any real challenges pop up. Biden has a few minor opponents, both of whom are struggling to get more than a few points in the polls.

Compare that to Trump. As an “incumbent,” he should be getting 98% of the vote in his primaries. Instead, last night at the Iowa caucus, he got 51%.

His party is not behind him as much as he thinks it is. And that’s good for us. Maybe some of the people in his party who don’t support him won’t show up at the polls in November.

Black and white distinction

Republicans: “Those protestors blocking the road and kneeling during football games while saying ‘Black Lives Matter’ are unAmerican and should be arrested!”

Also Republicans: “Look at those tourists entering the Capitol on January 6th to express their views to Congress! What patriots!”

Trump and the 14th Amendment

The 14th Amendment was passed just after the Civil War and has a provision that no one ever thought would be relevant any more:

“No Person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof.”

This is now an issue because many groups are fighting to keep Trump off the ballot for this very reason.

It’s clear that he has “engaged in insurrection” — and if you don’t believe that, just stop reading now because you’re a hopeless cause. But that isn’t the end of the discussion. There are lots of unanswered questions, and decisions haven’t been consistent.

The Supreme Court in Colorado recently said that Trump would be removed from the primary ballots because of this, but they acknowledged that the US Supreme Court will ultimately make that decision — something that doesn’t fill a lot of us with hope, especially given that one of the chief architects of the insurrection is the wife of one of the justices.

But this certainly raises some interesting legal questions, such as:

Does this apply to the President? The amendment doesn’t say specifically, although you’d have to ask why would they leave the President out? Is the President an “office of the United States”? If so, then the President is included. But we don’t know for sure, and as you can guess, Trump’s lawyers are doing everything they can to argue this loophole.

Can the Courts tell parties how they can run their primaries? Parties set their own primaries and primaries aren’t mentioned anywhere in the Constitution. Maybe because the states still run the primaries (state employees are the ones who sit at the polls, after all) the argument is that therefore the states can regulate the primaries — but that is also not clear.

Who decides someone is an insurrectionist? As I said before (and as Biden said today), it’s blatantly obvious that Trump was trying to illegally overturn an election. He clearly fits the profile. But he has not yet been found guilty of that. Perhaps we need Congress to officially declare him as an insurrectionist.

Who defines what it means to “engage in insurrection”? The Colorado Supreme Court pointed out that Trump gave a speech and encouraged the actions, did nothing to stop them, and hasn’t backed down since. Giving a speech to encourage violence is not protected under the 1st Amendment no matter what the idiots who Trump hires as lawyers say. But who knows what the Supreme Court will say?

Remember, the bottom line is this (as I emphasized in my book about the Constitution): The meaning of that document is whatever the current Supreme Court says. A different court could read the exact same document and come to a completely opposite decision (see Roe v. Wade).

So to get the answers to these questions, we’ll just have to wait and see what our corrupt, awful Supreme Court majority of members who were appointed by Presidents who lost the popular vote have to say about it.

I am not optimistic, no matter how clear it seems to me.

If Trump is immune to all laws…

The Supreme Court has been asked to determine whether Presidents and ex-Presidents are above the law and completely immune to criminal prosecution.

This has never been before the Court in our entire history, but that may be because, I dunno, we’ve never had a President charged with multiple felonies before.

If the Supreme Court agrees with Trump, then I guess it sets a precedent.

Biden: “Great! FBI, get rid of Trump and oh, the entire cast of Fox News. What are you gonna do? I’m immune!”

These idiots never consider the fact that anything they get like this works for us as well. “Oh, you think the Vice President can just nullify an election? Wonderful! Kamala, nullify all the Republicans who just got re-elected to the House.”

Things Trump said over the weekend

As a defendant, Donald Trump has the right to remain silent.

He just doesn’t have the ability.

This weekend, he did an interview on Face the Nation where he admitted that he had been told by lawyers that there was no election fraud, but he ignored them and proudly proclaimed that he pushed the fake election lies anyway.

“You know who I listened to? Myself,” Trump said, explaining why he ignored the advice of people who know stuff.

Then later he criticized Biden for being out of touch, claiming that Biden would lead us into “World War Two.” That is not a typo. That’s what he said. In that same speech, he proudly proclaimed that in the polls for 2024 that he was ahead of “Obama” (who, of course, is not running) and then bragged about the “fact” that he had beaten Obama in 2016. (I shouldn’t have to remind you that his opponent in 2016 was Hillary Clinton, right?) He then claimed in another interview that he didn’t know that someone had given Dr. Fauci the Presidential Award. (It was him. He gave Fauci the award.)

Yes, this is the man who claims Biden is “cognitively impaired.”

But he didn’t stop there.

He celebrated Rosh Hashanah by tweeting a graphic claiming he had done wonderful things for the Jewish people while berating the vast majority who never voted for him: “A reminder for liberal Jews who voted to destroy America & Israel because you believed false narratives! Let’s hope you learned from your mistake & make better choices moving forward!” Trump thinks if you didn’t vote for him, you are in support of “destroying America and Israel.” Remember that, my Jewish friends: Trump may constantly push standard anti-semitic conspiracy theories while claiming that Nazis and Klan members contain “good people” but he’s really on your side — you’re just too stupid to realize it.

I will give him credit for one thing, though: At the end of his tweet where he proclaims he’s done so much for Israel (as if that’s the only issue American Jews care about), he states that he is “Clearly, one of the greatest Anti Semites of our time!”

So I guess he does say the truth every once in a while.

A majority supports Trump’s arrest

Polls show that a majority of Americans support Trump being arrested, think the arrests are fair, and think he should go to jail if convicted.

This includes a majority of independents, who are needed to win any election.

But the GOP lives in a bubble, and they only talk to each other, and they all think Trump is popular among Americans.

I remember pointing this out to a Trump person on Facebook a while ago who said something similar. “No,” I replied. “A majority voted against him the first time; he never even reached a 50% approval rating his entire term; he lost the House and the Senate; and then he lost his second election by an even larger margin. He has never been supported by a majority of Americans.” I was unfriended immediately despite everything I said being true and not controversial.

Trump posts “Never Surrender” immediately after surrendering

That’s the ticket

According to the Trump indictment, his co-conspirators working on the alternative electors scheme referred to them as “fake” electors in conversations and e-mails among themselves.

Ha! “No, Your Honor, were absolutely sincere in our beliefs that these electors were valid and that we weren’t trying to commit any sort of election fraud. We just called them ‘fake’ because, uh, that stands for ‘Federally Available Kind Electors.’ Yeah, that’s the ticket.”

Trump: “Make me dictator”

Here’s a former President of the United States claiming that there was massive fraud (there wasn’t, and interviews have shown that he knows that) claiming we should terminate “all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution” in order to chuck democracy and name him dictator.

Trumpies don’t care about the laws or our Constitution (except the 2nd Amendment, which they constantly misinterpret). They’re perfectly fine with having a dictator in charge, as long as it’s their dictator.

Can you imagine how Republicans would scream if a Democrat suggested suspending the Constitution in order to have them named President after they lost an election?

What a sad state our country has become, where a large percentage of our population claims to be patriotic while supporting the most unpatriotic thoughts imaginable.

Trump’s Crimes vs. Hillary’s Emails

“But her emails!”

Some Trump supporters are seriously arguing that Hillary’s emails were worse than Trump’s literal stealing of classified documents.

Can you believe it? They’re still obsessed with their fantasy.

The GOP spent millions of dollars and countless hours in hearings trying to find anything they could pin on the Clintons — over and over again. Whitewater, Vincent Foster, emails, whatever. The Trump administration continued to investigate, frantically searching for anything they could use.

But nothing. There’s nothing there.

Obviously, if there was anything there, one of the Republican prosecutors would have been more than happy to bring charges.

Then again, this is from the party that believes what they want, evidence be damned. Climate change is a hoax, trickle-down economics works, they’re teaching Critical Race Theory in elementary schools, Trump won the election — when facts contradict their world view, they just pretend the facts don’t exist.

It’s delusional. Seriously. These people need help.

Tourists love stairways!

If there’s one thing all tourists to the Capitol want to see, it’s hallways and stairways. They love to take pictures of hallways, stairways, and exits.

You know they’re tourists because they kept saying things like “We’re coming for you” and “there’s no escape” when Democratic offices were pointed out. It’s pure coincidence that this happened the day before the insurrection.

And if you believe that, I have a bridge you may be interested in buying…
