The Gun Industry is more important than your lousy lives

Another mass shooting in the only country in the world that won’t do a thing to stop them.

“I know!” Republicans say. “Let’s do nothing! That should solve the problem!”

The vast majority of Americans support reasonable gun control such as stricter background checks. Even the majority of NRA members.

Republican Jesus says “Beat your swords into plowshares … No, wait! Guns! Much better.”

The NRA, however, is no longer a group of hunters but instead is the lobbying arm of the gun industry which funds most of its activities. The NRA acts in opposition to the desires of a majority of its members.

That’s the real enemy: The people who profit from the deaths and the politicians who care more about money than lives.

If we did nothing to protect ourselves against Islamic terrorists, people would scream that it would then be our fault for not defending ourselves properly.

These exact same people who scream about Islamic terrorism are not only doing nothing to prevent more gun deaths like this, but are actively working to make these deaths even easier, by getting rid of reasonable laws to prevent the mentally ill from getting guns (while at the same time eliminating funding for treating those mentally ill).

If this had only happened in a church, where the prayers would be so much more powerful and … Oh, wait

Well, if this had only happened in one of those states where everyone can open carry, because then a good guy with a gun would have stopped the … Oh, wait

President fails Civics 101

Yesterday’s angry Trump Tweet showed clearly that the man whose job it is to oversee our government is completely unqualified for the position.

trump-tweet-judge-visa-ban

Yeah, how dare a judge (or in this case, six of them so far) declare that what Trump was doing was unconstitutional? Where does that judge get such an absurd idea — the Constitution?

Our President couldn’t pass a fifth grade civics course. If he were one of the refugees fleeing terrorism, he would fail the basic US citizenship test. As many of us said throughout the campaign, the man is the most unqualified person ever to run for President, and now he is the most unqualified President ever.

And it’s not like this is some left-wing spin against the man, with fake news. He proves it himself, every day, as he posts his angry tweets and speaks on things he has no knowledge of or even a desire to learn about. Just ask Frederick Douglass — I’m sure he’s around to tell you.

The fact is that Trump does not have the power to just ignore US laws (not to mention US treaties) and unilaterally decide our immigration policy, nor can he limit it to one religion. (Oh, come now, don’t give me that argument that it’s about countries when these are all Muslim countries and Trump himself has referred to it as a “Muslim ban” — he even uses the word “ban” in the tweet above. And I’m not even going to spend time showing that none of the countries chosen have been the source of terrorism in the US, while the countries that have are not part of the ban — remember, those other countries do business with Trump.)

Our so-called President is mad at this “so-called judge” (to use his words) who was appointed by that mad liberal George W. Bush. Then again, let’s remember the words of George W. Bush here: “The face of terror is not the true faith of Islam. That’s not what Islam is all about. Islam is peace. These terrorists don’t represent peace. They represent evil and war.”

But expecting our current so-called President to understand that? Why, that would require him to know something. And he clearly has no desire to learn.

By my count, there’s been six rulings already on this (and an appeal late last night), and not one has gone Trump’s way. Can all the judges, both liberal and conservatives, be completely wrong about the Constitution that they’ve spent their adult lives studying — or can Lord Dampnut be correct? You choose!

Trump is ISIS’s best friend

For years, the policy of the United States was to separate the radical terrorists now known as ISIS from Muslims.

After all, there are about 1.6 billion Muslims in the world — 23% of the global population — and ISIS represents a very small percentage of them, in the same way the KKK represents a very small percentage of Christians.

And who does ISIS fight? Quite often, it’s other Muslims. (In the same way the Muslim Syrian refugees are running away from other Muslims.) dec-10-15-trump-and-isis

Obama refused to call these terrorists Muslims because not only is that an inaccurate and misleading description, but also because it hurts their cause.

Remember: ISIS wants us to call them Muslims, and wants us to hate all Muslims, because that helps them recruit new members and build their organization. They can then claim that the United States is at war with Islam (instead of with ISIS) and therefore, all Muslims must join in the fight.

Smart Presidents know that. Obama knew that. Even George W. Bush knew that.

So when you see pictures of ISIS cheering and laughing, remember: They couldn’t be happier with Trump. He’s doing exactly what they want him to do.

You don’t need to be a foreign policy expert to do the right thing about refugees

I’m no foreign policy expert.

And neither are you.

One of the problems I have when discussing what to do about terrorism is precisely that: I don’t know. I don’t have the information and intelligence that the experts have access to, I don’t study the subject completely, and, as I said a few days ago, I can see that whatever the solution is, it’s not going to be easy and simple.

And that’s why I get so frustrated with people who “know” what we should do.  Usually, it’s some variation of “Bomb them all” — which is what we have been doing. While some of it has been successful in removing important leaders, it also helps their recruitment and propaganda.

While I don’t know the best way to deal with this — even if there is a “best way” — I do know that turning away refugees is wrong.

“Hey, when we say ‘never again’ we didn’t really mean it…”

I don’t need to be a foreign policy expert there. I just need to have a heart.

The refugees are the ones running away from these fanatics. Most of them are educated, had jobs, and will be productive members of society. They’re just running away from war.

The recent attacks in Paris were performed by people who had already been in the country. All the evidence points away from the recent refugees.

Let’s face it, if some terrorist wants to commit these acts, they will find a way. They always do. Turning away people who need our help who are willing to obey our laws won’t matter to the terrorists. The only people we harm by turning our backs on the refugees are the ones who legitimately need our help.

Yes, Saudi Arabia and other middle eastern countries should be helping these refugees. But they’re not, because they’re the Bad Guys. Let’s not lower ourselves to their level.

As someone named Oliver Willis recently posted: “If only we had a seasonally appropriate story about middle eastern people seeking refuge and being turned away by the heartless…”

President refuses to blame Muslims

“Both Americans and Muslim friends and citizens, tax-paying citizens, and Muslims in nations were just appalled and could not believe what we saw on our TV screens,” said the President after this terrible attack.

“These acts of violence against innocents violate the fundamental tenets of the Islamic faith. And it’s important for my fellow Americans to understand that.”paris-1-jpg20150109111431

The President continued on, once more refusing to blame Muslims, saying “The face of terror is not the true faith of Islam. That’s not what Islam is all about. Islam is peace. These terrorists don’t represent peace. They represent evil and war.”

Conservatives everywhere fumed, because he refused to lay the blame where it properly belongs: on the religion itself and the people who follow that religion. How dare the President not realize this!

Oh, wait. Hold on, my bad.

None of that happened.

Because these words aren’t from President Obama. They’re from President Bush, after the 9/11 attack.

Sorry. For some reason, I dunno, I thought maybe conservatives would be consistent in their views and not change them based simply on who was President.

Silly me.

It’s time we started profiling conservative white men

Let’s face facts, people. Other than 9/11, the greatest terrorist attacks in America have been predominately from conservative, Christian white males. You are far more likely to die from a Christian attack than a Muslim one here.  It’s time we got rid of our political correctness and admit that these people all want us dead!

Who blew up a building in Kansas City? Conservative white guys. Who flew that plane into the IRS building? o-CHARLESTON-CHURCH-SHOOTING-570A conservative white guy. Who shot up the Sikh Temple in Wisconsin? Who murdered people in that church in Knoxville? Who blew up a bomb at the Olympic park in Atlanta? Who shot up the Holocaust Museum? And who, today, killed children in a church in South Carolina?

Hint: It wasn’t Muslims.

Those are only some of the examples. Clearly, we must start treating all conservative Christian white men as terrorists. Perhaps we should start deporting them all, regardless of whether we have evidence against them or not. And it’s not like we need to worry about rights like habeas corpus — these are terrorists we’re talking about. Simply being a conservative Christian white male is enough to be a suspect.

This policy of profiling and saying that every conservative white male is a potential terrorist and therefore deserves no rights should be quite popular among the people who have for years argued against giving rights to suspected terrorists: Conservative white males.

Oh, and we also need to start profiling babies. Last year, more people in America were killed by toddlers handling guns than by Muslims committing acts of terror. Clearly, babies cannot be trusted — our only solution is to profile them all and place restrictions on where babies can be taken. (I mean, duh, we’re not going to restrict guns, are we? They have rights, you know!)

* If you can’t see the point I am making here, please refrain from the angry responses.

Another non-Muslim attack

As I write this, there is a murdering gunman loose in my area.  He stalked a state trooper barracks and then killed one who was merely going to work, and critically injured another.  Schools have closed, and everyone is in a panic, worrying where he could show up next.

If I told you that it was a white guy who hates the government and loves his guns, you wouldn’t be at all surprised, would you?

Yet no one is saying we should round up all the white guys, close down their churches, and declare war on libertarian extremism. I mean, come on, it’s not like the guy is Muslim.

I refuse to put the killer's picture up. This is Trooper Bryon Dickson. (He looks familiar; I'm trying to remember if I've had any cases with him.)

I refuse to put the killer’s picture up. This is Trooper Bryon Dickson. (He looks familiar; I’m trying to remember if I’ve had any cases with him.)

The fact is that we are much more likely to be a victim of crazy anti-government white guy attacks in this country than we are from any Muslim terrorist group.   It was only a year ago that another one of these extremists shot up a local government meeting just a few miles from my house, killing three.

And then there’s last June, with those Las Vegas killers who belonged to a white supremacist group.

And let’s not forget Timothy McVeigh.  And that guy who flew a plane into an IRS building.  Then there’s the guys who shoot abortion clinic doctors in the name of Jesus. But for restraint on the part of the US government, I’d probably be including Clive Bundy on this list as well …  Just a long list of angry white guys who hate the government and only know how to take action with violence against innocent people.

Terrorists, that’s what they are.

So the next time a friend talks about how we should be suspecting every single Muslim person in America, ask if we should be doing the same for every single white conservative, because you’re much more likely to be killed by one of them.
