Why Obama won’t call the Terrorists Muslims

The right is outraged that Obama won’t call the terrorists Muslims, because after all that is who we are really at war with, isn’t it?

Obama, using logic and reason, argues that to call them that is to legitimize them.  ISIS and al Qaeda and the other radicals want us to declare that we are at war with Islam, because that’s the best recruiting tool they have. cmimg_22296

“We must never accept the premise that they put forward because it is a lie,” Obama said. “Nor should we grant these terrorists the legitimacy they seek. They are not religious leaders, they are terrorists.  We are not at war with Islam. We are at war with people who have perverted Islam.”

Ha ha!  You see the problem, right?  He’s once more assuming the right wing cares for things like logic, facts, and reason!  This can also be seen by claims on the right that Obama is doing nothing to fight these terrorists when in fact, he’s been bombing them pretty regularly for months.  Facts!  Who needs facts when you have anger!

Today comes news that these terrorists have bombed Islamic religious sites and mosques and burned books because, hey, they’re evil.  Seriously, there’s not much debate on that part.  But that sure doesn’t seem the kind of thing that a Muslim would do, does it?

Using religion as the excuse to cause terror helps to convince others of that religion that it is acceptable because their god wants it.  By refusing to legitimize the religion, you can cut some of that power.

Obama refuses to fight hatred with hatred

Can you believe this guy?  Republicans surely can’t.  Here we are, being attacked by extremists who hate us all without reason and want to kill everyone in specific groups, and Obama absolutely refuses to reciprocate by doing the exact same thing back to them!  cmimg_22296

I mean, it’s almost as if he doesn’t want to be revealed as a war-mongering hypocrite or something.

Just look at the things he has said:

They are not religious leaders, they’re terrorists. And we are not at war with Islam. We are at war with people who have perverted Islam…

The terrorists do not speak for over a billion Muslims who reject their hateful ideology. They no more represent Islam than any mad man who kills innocents in the name of God represents Christianity or Judaism or Buddhism or Hinduism. No religion is responsible for terrorism, people are responsible for violence and terrorism.

Then he calls out Muslims who do not strongly fight against these extremists.

Muslim leaders need to do more to discredit the notion that our nations are determined to suppress Islam—that there is an inherent clash of civilizations. Everybody has to speak up very clearly that, no matter what the grievance, violence against innocents doesn’t defend Islam or Muslims, it damages Islam and Muslims.

So you can see why conservatives are up in arms over outrageous statements like this!

You can see, can’t you?

Then could you please explain it to me?

Republicans: “Nice country you got here. Shame if something were to happen to it.”

Republicans have pledged to not fund Homeland Security because Obama is allowing immigrants with children to not be deported under very strict circumstances (the old Reagan immigration policy).

Got that?  All of us will be at risk unless we kick families out of the country to fend for themselves, Lord-of-the-Flies style.

And then they want to blame Democrats. “If there is a successful attack during a DHS shutdown, we should build a number of coffins outside each Democratic office and say, ‘You are responsible for these dead Americans,’” said Republican Senator Mark Kirk.

So they admit to their blackmail and say that if people die because of it, it’s the fault of the ones who refuse to be blackmailed.

But then something amazing happened. Some Republicans looked at the polls for once and realized their position is hugely unpopular. Over 60% of Americans favor Obama’s immigration policy.

Senator Kirk was the first one to pedal backwards, saying “I generally agree with the Democratic position here.”  No more talk about coffins.

At least for now.  Give it another week.  Something else equally as deplorable is certain to happen.

Foreigners Run Fox News

It seems that one of the 9/11 conspirators has named a Saudi prince as a major player in the attack — the same prince who is one of the owners of Fox News, along with Australian Rupert Murdock.  1506991_787180068041716_6786631590963988121_n

Well, that’s just silly.  Why, if he had an influence at Fox, they’d be using their network to undermine American interests by constantly attacking our President, lying about our accomplishments, encouraging the destruction of our environment, building dissent among our citizens, and trying to pit religions against each other.

Wait a minute…

In all seriousness, while it is true that this guy was the second-largest stockholder at Fox (and still owns some of it), you need to be cynical about this new allegation.  After all, this 9/11 conspirator is unreliable. He’s said a bunch of other things in the past that weren’t true, and now he’s suddenly remembering that Waleed bin Talal is involved?  Yeah, I’m unconvinced.  This guy suffers from all kinds of paranoid delusions (as his own lawyers pointed out during his trial).  Prosecutors don’t believe he is credible, so it’s doubtful this will go anywhere.

Still, it is kind of ironic that the “news” network that rails against Muslims and warns of Sharia Law is partially owned by a Muslim who enforces that law in his own country.

Saudi Arabia’s daily beheadings

Saudia Arabia has been beheading people lately at a rate of one a day, and then displaying the bodies in public for everyone to see.

The beheadings have included such terrible crimes as “sorcery.”

Some of the beheadings are a way for the government to show strength, to discourage those who wish to bring democracy and reform to this country.

Why isn’t there mention of this in the US Press?  Shouldn’t we be outraged by this?

Oh, right, they’re our allies.  Because oil. Saudi

Well, surely Fox News will say something, because if for no other reason, it will make Obama look weak for not — what’s that?  Fox News is partially owned by one of the Saudi Princes?

Well, that must be pure coincidence.  Why would Fox News, a network owned by a Saudi Prince and an Australian, want to constantly attack America and our President, and make us look bad in the eyes of the world, thus diminishing our influence?

Wait a minute…

How to Criticize Israel

by guest blogger Daniel M. Kimmel

People have been debating the tragic situation in Gaza for a few weeks now and I know some of my friends have gotten very upset when their arguments have been met with accusations of antisemitism. isra-MMAP-mdThey reply that criticism of Israel isn’t antisemitic, and they have a point. Often it isn’t. Israelis, after all, criticize their country all the time. However often it is, and that’s because the person is making an argument that – whether they intended it or not – marks them as someone with a specific problem with Jews or the Jewish State. Here’s a guide on how to avoid looking like a bigot.

“I can’t be antisemitic. The Palestinians are Semites.” – Learn how to use Google. “Antisemitism” does not mean “being against Semites.” It was coined in 19th century Germany specifically to denote the hatred of Jews. The coinage is often attributed to Jew hater Wilhelm Marr, so he ought to know what he meant.

“Israel is a colonial power. A bunch of European Jews stole the land from the Palestinians.” – Learn some history. Jews have lived there for more than two thousand years, including under Muslim, Turkish, and British rule. At no time was there ever a country called “Palestine” whose people were the local Arabs. Indeed, prior to Yassir Arafat’s creation of the Palestine Liberation Organization in 1964, no one referred to the local Arabs as anything but the local Arabs. As for the British mandate in Palestine, 77% of the land was given to the Arabs (much for the newly minted “Hashemite Kingdom of Trans-Jordan”), with the remainder for the State of Israel. The Jews happily accepted this sliver. The Arabs responded with the 1948 war.

“Israel must end its occupation of Gaza.” – They did so, unilaterally, in 2005 abandoning 21 settlements. IDF troops physically removed Israeli settlers who refused to leave.

“Israel hasn’t really ended the occupation, because they’ve got a blockade in place.” – It’s a very curious blockade. Food, medicine, and other humanitarian needs are not only allowed in, but shipments continued during the fight. For a while cement and other construction material were permitted, but they were used by Hamas not to build schools, repair homes, etc., but to construct rockets and establish between thirty and forty attack tunnels. If you knew someone was trying to break into your home to kill you, would you insist they must be provided the tools to do so?

“Those tunnels aren’t for terrorism. They’re escape hatches.” – If you’ve made this argument, you are an idiot and need to stop posting. Hamas boasts about their use for attacking Israel and engaging in terror and kidnapping.

“The rockets Hamas has fired aren’t a big deal. Israel’s ‘Iron Dome’ defense system has provided a shield against them.” – So if my constant shooting at you causes you to don a kevlar vest then it’s okay for me to keep shooting? Hamas has fired more than a thousand rockets at Israel, aiming at civilian targets. Would you like to live under a constant threat where sirens go off and you have to run to a bomb shelter?

“Israel has been firing at Palestinian civilians.” – No, Israel has been firing at Hamas. Hamas has been using the Gazans as shields. Rockets have been found at three UNWRA schools. (The UN helpfully turned the rockets over to “local authorities” – which is to say, Hamas.) The Hamas command bunker is beneath a hospital, from which rockets have been fired. In addition, unlike almost any other nation at war, Israel has preceded attacks with warnings by cell phone, flyer, and “knocking” (non-explosive missiles).

“Israel’s warnings are a sham. They give people only fifteen minutes to evacuate.” – As opposed to Hamas, which gives no warning for their attacks at all… and urges Gazans to stay put, so as to maximize civilian casualties.

“The real problem is the Israeli settlements.” – If one were to argue that the settlement policy has been a tragic mistake, you’d get no argument from me. If one were to argue that the settler movement represents some of the most extreme elements in Israeli society, likewise. But the notion that if only Israel would stop the settlements everything would be fine fails on two counts. First, Israel agreed to a ten month freeze on settlements in 2009-2010. This was to create space for peace talks. The Palestinian Authority did nothing until the last month, and then demanded the freeze be extended. Second, some 20% of the population of Israel are Arabs (with full civil rights and participation in government) and the Palestinian position is that they want a “right of return” for some or all of their “refugees” who, voluntarily or not, left Israel in 1948. However a newly formed Palestinian nation is apparently to be Jew-free. Why is it that Arabs “must” be allowed to “return” to Israel, but Jews must entirely vacate a newly minted Palestine?

“The Israelis are engaging in ‘ethnic cleansing.’” – When Israel unilaterally withdrew from Gaza they left being operating greenhouses and opened the way for outside investment there, providing the means for the Palestinians to take the first steps to establish a viable Palestinian state. The greenhouses were, instead, looted and destroyed and the investments and supplies were diverted to Hamas’s military program. Time and again Israel has taken steps for peace: returning the Sinai to Egypt (which pointedly DIDN’T want Gaza back), negotiating the Oslo Accords, and withdrawing from Gaza. They were repaid with the Intifada and rocket attacks. Providing humanitarian aid and attempting to help them establish their own economy are not things one associates with “ethnic cleansing.”

“Gaza is like the Warsaw Ghetto.” – Because the Nazis were known to let food and medicine into the Ghetto and set up a field hospital to take care of the sick and injured Jews? No, those who rely on Nazi analogies (of which this is the most polite) are crossing over into overt antisemitism. The Holocaust is still within living memory, and to accuse Jews of doing anything even remotely approaching Nazi genocide is not only wrong, it is demonstrates that the accuser knows nothing about either subject. It also strongly suggests that you are, indeed, an antisemite. (Or, if you are Jewish, someone who had a severely traumatic Hebrew school experience.)

So if you want to criticize Israel, go ahead. Avoid the bogus arguments above and try to be constructive. Israel should “make peace with Hamas?” Explain how you make peace with a group whose avowed purpose – in their charter, in their public statements, in their actions – is your destruction and the murder of all Jews. Israel’s response should be “proportionate?” How many Israelis have to die before you would let them defend themselves? Israel should “stop violating human rights?” Great, and what do you have to say about Syria, ISIS, North Korea, and other entities engaging in mass murder and oppression? Why are you silent about them but are all bent out of shape over a democratic regime defending itself from actual attacks? See, you can criticize Israel, but it involves two things you’re probably not willing to do: learn the actual facts and then actually think about what you’re saying. If you’re really concerned about the poor people of Gaza, call for the disarming of Hamas, and insist that Israel and the Palestinian Authority resume negotiations. Israel has taken the big step of acknowledging that a two state solution is the only viable answer. The PA can’t even bring itself to accept the Jewish State of Israel, only grudgingly saying Israel has a “right to exist” but unable to admit what Israel is (yet insisting that their own Palestinian aspirations must be fully recognized).

Someday, perhaps, a Sadat or a Mandela will arise among the Palestinians and boldly lead his or her people to a peaceful resolution. That’s something that people of good will on both sides ought to be desiring.

Just say no to ill eagles!

“Anti-immigrants crying about how we should help our poor here first instead of kid refugees from Central America would never help poor kids here.” – Lalo Alcarez   ill-eagles-550x400

You have to wonder about the mindset of these people.  They hate immigrants so much that they block buses bringing aid to the kids.  They’re willing to kick children across the borders to fend for themselves.

“I mean, come on,” they think.  “It’s not like these kids are white.”

These are the same people who say things like “Why do I have to press ‘1’ to speak English?” and demand that everyone should know the language while they misspell every other word on their protest signs.  These are the same people who (as Lalo Alcarez points out) demand that we take care of our own first while simultaneously fighting against any sort of program that would help us take care of our own first.  These are the same people who think that immigration is some huge conspiracy by Democrats to create more Democratic voters (who will not even be eligible to vote for many years even if we admitted them today).

There’s a reason the eagle is ill.

Holy Cow, I agree with Glenn Beck again

Twice in a month.  What is happening to our world?

Beck has vowed to help the immigrant refugee children coming to our borders, running from war and drug gangs. glenn_beck He has pledged to provide food, water, toys, and needed supplies.

“Through no fault of their own, they are caught in political crossfire,” he said.

Not surprisingly, he’s receiving death threats and calls for boycotting of his show from his fellow conservatives, many of whom hate immigrants so much they have absolutely no compassion left for children.  Many of the angriest are also Christians who apparently believe that Jesus loves the little children, unless they come from across the border — then to hell with ’em.

However, some believers seem to have remembered what Jesus really said.  As much as I dislike Glenn, I also want to encourage people like him when they do the right thing.

“When America stops being good, we are no longer able to be great,” Beck said.  I couldn’t have said it better myself.

What the hell happened to us?

Children are running away from war.  Children.  They are coming to us, seeking comfort and help.

And Americans are yelling insults at them and demanding that they be turned away.  Protesters_force_buses_carrying_undocume_1758150000_6619946_ver1.0_640_480

It’s more of the Know Nothings who hate all immigrants (especially non-white ones).  I just stare when I see the anger in their faces as they scream at the scared children.  What is wrong with us that we are turning away children who need help?  What does that say about our humanity?

Many (if not most) of these protesters down in Texas will go home tired after screaming at these kids and then spend their Sundays at Church, ignoring every single thing the preacher tells them Jesus said.

“If we can afford two goddamn wars, a trillion dollar tax giveaway to the 1%, and more money spent investigating Benghazi than the failure of the VA — then we sure as hell can afford to take care of a few buses of refugee children. ” – David Gerrold

The Benghazi Scandal?

I’ve been asking what the Benghazi Scandal is for months now, but no one has been able to explain it to me. It apparently had something to do with the fact that the first reason given for the attack was that anti-Islamic video and then later, as more information became available, the story changed a bit.

Still not sure why that is a scandal.

As you may have heard, the Obama administration captured the mastermind behind the attack this week.  ahmed-abu-khattala(This is the same Obama administration that captured the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks, that ousted Gadaffi without any American lives lost, and that secured the release of an American held hostage for five years, just to remind you.)  And guess what this villain told us?  Yep, the attacks were because of the video.

So where does that leave the conspiracy-minded Republicans who insist that Beghazi is a scandal?  I have no idea, because clearly facts are not important to them — they believe it’s a scandal and therefore it must be.

This is despite the fact that everyone except Fox News realizes it isn’t.
